Dr. Monica Chwala is a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist in San Antonio, TX. She is based in the Timberwood Park area and is available to serve general practices and emergency animal hospitals throughout her service area in the San Antonio metropolitan region.

Biography

Dr. Monica Chwala earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. After graduation, she completed a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at North Carolina State University. Following this, she completed a 3-year residency program for small animal internal medicine at University of Wisconsin. She is a board certified veterinary Internist with ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine).

Dr. Chwala is originally from Chicago, making her a proud foodie. She enjoys trying new restaurants and breweries in her spare time. To relax, she loves spending time with friends, family, and most importantly her 3 dogs — Addie, a Weimaraner; Xander, a “San Antonio Special” off the streets, and Ollie, her first small dog… a Chihuahua). She enjoys traveling, being in the sun either by the pool or on a beach, playing volleyball, horse-back riding, and watching movies.

Dr. Chwala’s professional interests include infectious disease (i.e. fungal, pythium, tick-borne), auto immune diseases (IMHA, IMTP, IMPA), endocrinology (i.e. Diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s, thyroid diseases, Addison’s disease), hematology/biomarkers, hepatic diseases, and gastrointestinal diseases to name a few. One of my favorite procedures is ‘fishing’ out gastric foreign bodies. We are thrilled she will be sharing these expertise with the veterinary community in San Antonio.

What is a board-certified veterinary internal medicine specialist?

A veterinary internal medicine specialist is a veterinarian who has completed advanced training in internal medicine (including a one-year internship and three-year residency) following graduation from their veterinary college. The residency training culminates with a comprehensive examination covering all aspects of veterinary small animal internal medicine. Once these requirements have been fulfilled, the veterinarian is considered to be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).

The umbrella of small animal internal medicine includes many sub-disciplines including gastroenterology (esophageal, stomach and intestinal disease), hepatology (liver and pancreatic disease), endocrinology (hormonal disease), infectious diseases, urology (urinary tract disease), nephrology (kidney disease), respiratory medicine (nose, airway and lung disease), and hematology (blood cells) & immunology (immune diseases). In many cases, the signs of a patient may include many of these organ systems. Due to their holistic approach, internal medicine specialists may also manage cases of patients with neurologic, cardiovascular or cancerous diseases, especially when these patients also share diseases within the scope of internal medicine.
