Multiple Melanomas

Below is an aged Thoroughbred Gray Stallion. He, like many gray horses, suffers from multiple melanomas throughout his body. The most common place to find these melanomas is the perineum area. They are usually stumbled upon when performing a general physical examination of a gray horse (if this is not done routinely then it should be done on all gray horses). Usually these are benign tumors when they are found on gray horses (more likely to be malignant when they are found on other breeds).

This Stallion has a very progressive state of melanomas in the perineum area and other areas in the body. They look worse then they really are and they do not obstruct the anus nor do they have any consequences on the stallion’s breeding ability. This Stallion is presented for lameness evaluation and not because of the melanomas. It is also interesting that the Melanomas are found along the neck, which again seem to have a minor influence on the stallions well being.
